The Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) is seeking qualified and enthusiastic individuals to join our Forensic Services within the Direct Care and Treatment (DCT) division of agency.

Forensics Services in St. Peter is comprised of the Forensic Mental Health Program, the Forensic Nursing Home, and Community Integrated Services. Forensics Services provides mental health evaluation and treatment services to individuals diagnosed with a mental illness who present a risk to public safety. This is a safe and secure treatment environment. Community Integrated Services provides oversight to individuals on Provisional Discharge throughout the State of Minnesota.

This position exists to provide leadership within the Forensic Services (FS) Nursing Department through coordination and delivery of nursing orientation and annual nursing skills fair, development, and validation of nurse’s competency, critically looking at all nursing practices and opportunities for improvement and serving as a role model for excellent nursing service delivery. The RN Educator will serve as a consultant and collaborate with other treatment disciplines and committees.

Responsibilities:

Coordinate the orientation and competency evaluation of all Forensic Services nursing staff and the development of training and competencies for annual nursing skills fair.

Demonstrates proficiency and timeliness in the establishment and periodic review of pertinent Forensic nursing processes and procedures as outlined in the Forensic Service Nursing Service Delivery Plan.

Coordinate the orientation, training and clinical experience for all nursing students.

Create a work environment that ensures the highest level of safe quality nursing practice and the promotion of continuous improvement.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse License in the State of Minnesota

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing

  • Have at least three years of psychiatric nursing experience.

  • Clinical risk experience in an acute care setting or healthcare system environment.

  • Have at least two years of experience with relevant accreditation and survey processes; understand standards and state and federal rules and regulations as applicable to healthcare service delivery organizations.

  • Advanced knowledge of principles for adult learners

  • Knowledge of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and ability to prioritize patient’s needs, according to this model.

  • Knowledge of and ability to apply infection control procedures and techniques, including universal precautions.

  • Interviewing skills sufficient to contribute to development of interview process, participate as interview panel member and to document interview results.

  • Demonstrate good leadership skills necessary in critical thinking, independent judgment, initiative, and autonomy.

  • Advanced skills and abilities in assessment and implementation of nursing actions to effectively teach others regarding physical and mental health, illness prevention, and effect rehabilitation.

  • Ability to develop and implement a nursing care plans.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Patient care experience within a mental health or behavioral health setting.

  • Masters in Nursing Education
