The Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) is seeking qualified and enthusiastic individuals to join our Forensic Services within the Direct Care and Treatment (DCT) division of agency.

The Forensics Services in St. Peter is comprised of the Forensic Mental Health Program, the Forensic Nursing Home, and Community Integrated Services. Forensics Services provides mental health evaluation and treatment services to individuals diagnosed with a mental illness who present a risk to public safety. This is a safe and secure treatment environment. This position is specifically assigned to the Community Integrated Services Program which provides services to individuals who reside in the community throughout all 87 Minnesota Counties.

The team has an opportunity for you to join us as an Occupational Therapist Senior. We seek applicants with a positive attitude and strong work ethic, who are ready to share our dedication to the people we serve.

  1. To provide advanced Occupational Therapy services for individuals at FS and in the community that are civilly committed as Mentally Ill and Dangerous (MI/D). To advocate for the profession of Occupational Therapy and provide information as to how Occupational Therapy is fundamental in the comprehensive treatment of individuals.

  2. The Occupational Therapist is accountable for the safety and effectiveness of the occupational therapy service delivery process. This service assesses the physical, psychological and social functions of the individual, identifies areas of dysfunction and involves the individual in the structured program of activity to overcome disability. The areas assessed and implemented include but are not limited to: Independent Living Skills (ILS), Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL), Activities of Daily Living (ADL), Sensory-motor performance, Psychosocial skills and Physical Disabilities.

  3. The incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.

  4. Given the integrated nature of CIS work, the OT Sr. functions with expertise in occupational assessment and interventions and with consultation as needed from colleagues with complementary expertise; the OT Sr. integrates multidisciplinary expertise to facilitate positive outcomes for clinically complex individuals.

  5. The OT Sr. develops and provides individualized, multi-disciplinary training and technical assistance to community providers and other professionals to: enhance their abilities to manage difficult behavioral and system issues; assist care providers to increase the stability of clinically complex individuals’ community living; and divert inpatient admissions when safely possible.

Job duties include:

Complete clinical assessments and documentation as needed to articulate appropriate community supports for clinically complex individuals and their support networks.

Provide support and/or crisis prevention & response plans to CIS clients and their supports promoting evidence-based practices, person-centered principles, and Positive Behavior Support methods.

Provide general consultation for case formulation, care coordination, and Clinical Guidance to parties involved, including individuals served, their families, service providers, counties, employers, and CIS employees.

Identify needs for, develop, and present training to CIS customers (external and internal) to enhance community capacity to support clinically complex individuals with an emphasis on facilitating positive team outcomes.

To safeguard clients’ human rights, implement practices that meet or exceed standards of practice articulated by state and federal regulations and professional credentialing boards, as appropriate.

Use the principles and methods of Clinical Guidance as a foundation for service delivery and staff development.

Participate in professional development activities to develop skills that support CIS’s mission and that the OT Sr. values.

Contribute to efforts to improve the quality-of-service systems for individuals with complex behavioral health challenges through participation in relevant collaborations and systems improvement activities.

Minimum Qualifications

To qualify, The OT Sr. must maintain current Minnesota licensure as an occupational therapist. OR be currently licensed to practice occupational therapy in another state and must obtain licensure in Minnesota prior to appointment. The OT Sr. also must maintain a valid driver’s license, continually meet DHS standards of insurability, and maintain Minnesota liability insurance for business use of their personal vehicle as needed.

In addition, you must satisfy one of the following combinations of education and experience:

• Have a Bachelor's degree in occupational therapy from an accredited program; AND

• At least 18 months of professional, post-licensure occupational therapy experience

OR

• Have Master's degree in occupational therapy from an accredited program.

• At least 6 months of professional, post-licensure occupational therapy experience
