Watonwan County Library Children's Services Coordinator in St. James, Minnesota

NATURE OF WORK This is responsible and lead work coordinating children's and young adult materials and programming for the library system. Work is performed independently according to standard procedures under limited supervision of the Library Director and Assistant Director. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Responsible for development and maintenance of the children s and young adult collection for the library system. Selects materials, evaluates the collection, and withdraws materials. Develops and conducts story time and other programs for children and parents which encourage reading, viewing, and listening skills at headquarters and assists branches to do the same. Coordinates children s and young adult programming with other libraries, schools, and community groups; will assist in other library outreach opportunities as needed. Provides service to elementary schools and community through programs such as day care story times, class visits, summer reading programs events, I Love to Read, etc. Represents Watonwan County Library at children's and young adult-oriented library meetings at the local, regional and state level. Participation in professional development opportunities at the local, regional and state level is encouraged. Promotes the library through news releases and ads, bibliographies, brochures and other written materials, and public presentations. Designs and maintains bulletin boards, artwork, displays and exhibits at the headquarters library and for community functions. Assists patrons with selection and checking in and out of library materials. Performs receptionist duties at the circulation desk. Provides patrons with information and reference services and responds to phone inquiries. Registers new library patrons. Places holds on library materials. Collects service charges for overdue and billed materials. Answers branch automation questions. Maintains awareness of current trends and practices in library science by attending workshops, conferences, and reading current literature. Performs other work as required. Responsible to observe all Watonwan County safety and health rules and apply the principles of accident prevention in day-to-day duties. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS Training and Experience A Masters in Library Science or considerable library experience is preferred. Experience working with children is preferred. Requires at least 6 months experience with responsibility for clerical duties, computer/data entry, and public contact/customer service.
