Bump Position Summary: We are recruiting an outreach, education, and data coordinator to join the Voyageurs Wolf Project (VWP) team. This position offers the opportunity to be involved in myriad aspects of wolf research and science including outreach and education efforts to increase public awareness about the research done by the Voyageurs Wolf Project as well as database management and project administration that sustains VWP research, and allows VWP to share the research with the public to meet broader impact goals. Job Duties Research/Data Management (40%): The successful candidate will assist with field data entry, as well as help explore, curate, maintain, and provide QA/QC on databases used by the project. The successful candidate will also be responsible for helping to facilitate data sharing with external collaborators and project partners. The successful candidate will be largely responsible for QA/QC for a large remote camera database that is primarily maintained to assess social dynamics of wolf packs, identify individual wolves via pelage and distinctive physical characteristics, and assess recruitment of pups over time. Administration/Outreach & Education (55%): The successful candidate will assist with administrative tasks on the project that include but are not limited to working with landowners to secure and maintain access to private lands for research, purchasing supplies, answering emails to VWP, coordinating research activities with external collaborators and graduate students, answering comments and messages on social media accounts associated with VWP, assisting with fundraising efforts, and shipping equipment and samples. The successful candidate will also coordinate, organize, and at times, lead outreach and educational events for the VWP including webinars, field trips, and public events. Fieldwork (5%): The successful candidate will periodically help with fieldwork activities conducted by the VWP including but not limited to searching clusters of GPS-collared wolves to identify kills and other behaviors, deploying and maintaining remote cameras, capturing and collaring wolves, prey surveys, documenting abandoned dens and rendezvous sites, and implementing non-lethal tools to mitigate wolf-livestock conflict. Location: Greater Voyageurs Ecosystem, MN and Twin Cities, MN Qualifications Required Qualifications: BA/BS or a combination of related education and work experience to equal four years preferably in the field, including one year of experience assisting with wolf research. Strong communication skills, project management skills, experience working with large datasets, and the ability to work both collaboratively and independently are critical. Successful applicants must have demonstrated experience conducting fieldwork in challenging winter and summer environments. Preferred Qualifications: Candidates will ideally have: - field experience in northern Minnesota, familiarity with northern hardwood and boreal forests, and be able to identify all wildlife species in such systems. - have detailed knowledge of, and first-hand experience conducting wolf research in northern Minnesota or similar boreal ecosystems. First-hand knowledge and experience is crucial for sharing the science of the VWP with the public during outreach and education events including, and being able to readily answer questions from the public. The ideal candidate would have the following research experience: experience capturing, immobilizing, and collaring at least 10 wolves experience searching cl sters of GPS-locations from collared wolves during summer to identify where wolves have killed small prey and to document wolf ambushing sites. substantial knowledge about the natural history and ecology of beavers-an important summer food source for wolves in Voyageurs-and experience conducting fieldwork focused on studying wolf-beaver interactions demonstrable experience using remote cameras to study wolves and considerable experience downloading, organizing, and entering remote camera data. Ideally, candidates will have had experience maintain large camera arrays (>200-250 cameras) across remote environments experience visiting and documenting homesites of wolves (ideally >30-40 homesites) documented fieldwork experience operating snowmobiles, ATVs, and 4X4 vehicles. demonstrable experience mitigating wolf-livestock conflict and working with private landowners Experience with field survey methods to estimate the abundance of wolves' prey - experience working with large datasets, including curating, maintaining, and providing QA/QC on databases - experience identifying the wildlife captured on remote cameras in northern Minnesota or similar ecosystems, and categorizing their behavior - experience identifying individual wolves captured on remote cameras based on physical markings and appearances - experience with outreach and education events including public presentations, presentations to teachers and students, and setting-up/hosting informational tables at public events Benefits Working at the University At the University of Minnesota, you'll find a flexible work environment and supportive colleagues who are interested in lifelong learning.
