A Day in the Life

The Senior Legal Counsel, Global Privacy Program (“Senior Legal Counsel”) plays a crucial role in supporting Medtronic´s commitment to data privacy and protection. The Senior Legal Counsel partners with other members of the COE to integrate privacy principles into operations and projects and provides guidance and support on privacy related matters. Will be responsible for drafting privacy-related documents, monitoring and interpreting changes in data privacy legislations and translating these changes into actionable, programmatic privacy requirements. Collaborating with various team across the organization, will contribute to strengthening our privacy program and ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations.

The Senior Legal Counsel reports into the Senior Manager, Global Privacy Program, and is a key member of the Global Data & Privacy Center of Expertise (“D&P COE”).

This role will reside in our Operational Headquarters in Minneapolis, MN and will work per the hybrid guidelines.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

  • Monitor, track, and analyze emerging and new legal and regulatory privacy requirements. Analyze, research, and interpret how changes in legislation impact organizational processes and compliance requirements, where appropriate in cooperation with regional privacy legal counsels.

  • Translate legal and regulatory changes and industry best practices into clear, actionable changes in the program. This includes updating the privacy controls library, processes, and templates for impact assessment (PIA) activities, privacy by design, data transfer issues.

  • Other legal support to the Global Privacy Program includes legal advice regarding Data Subject Requests, incidents, M&A and divestiture activities, certification, investigations, audit, and monitoring activities.

  • Draws up privacy related agreements and contract terms, data transfer agreements; may be involved in negotiating.

  • Draft, research, review, and update privacy-related documents, including policies, procedures and other compliance and privacy knowledge materials.

  • Provides legal advice, counsel and service to internal cross-company clients concerning legal data protection and privacy requirements and obligations.

  • Assists in reviewing training and awareness materials to increase data privacy awareness and understanding across the organization.

  • Provide strategic and proactive counsel to create innovative solutions to complex data and privacy issues, this includes actively thinking forward and developing new concepts under the legal frameworks applying to Medtronic.

Core Skills

  • Excellent analytical, research and drafting skills, including contract drafting.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to translate legal topics into actionable requirements for implementation in the privacy program through published documentation.

  • Collaborate effectively across Medtronic operating units and functions.

  • Ability to assess risk strategically and help find solutions that enable the management of risk while supporting the achievement of client goals.

  • Ability to handle and prioritize multiple projects and tasks

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

  • Juris Doctor or equivalent U.S. law degree from an accredited institution

  • 2+ years of legal experience with a focus on data privacy and protection to include experience with global data protection laws and regulations (e.g. HIPAA, GDPR, etc.)

Nice to Have

  • CIPP, CHPC or similar certification, or sufficient demonstrated experience and/or formal education in Privacy and Compliance

  • Strong understanding of privacy principles, regulations, and privacy operations

  • Experience in the healthcare industry.

  • Experience supporting a data privacy or equivalent function directly or indirectly for a large, regulated, and matrixed organization.

  • Demonstrated experience building positive relationships with a variety of stakeholders, including with employees, clients, senior management, external parties.

  • Demonstrated results orientation (driving to deadlines, financial targets, project goals, etc.)

  • Strong ability to work collaboratively and partner with employees, other leaders, clients, and vendors.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$127,200.00 - $190,800.00

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).
