RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE Supervises no staff, but may help plan and direct preserve work groups, including staff or volunteers. Maintain preserve areas frequented by the visiting public Remove exotic species and/or species monitoring (including use of herbicides) Prescribed burn preparation, implementation, and post-burn monitoring Maintain tools and equipment Brush and tree removal Seed harvest Photo and vegetation monitoring Other preserve management activities All TNC staff actively participating on a prescribed burn must be qualified as a FFT2. The Preserve Management Assistant will participate in prescribed burns, preparing fire lines, maintaining equipment, post-burn monitoring and other tasks. Requires considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain. WHAT YOU'LL BRING High school diploma and 6 months of related experience. Must be qualified, or able to become qualified, as a Fire Fighter Type 2 (FFT2), including Introduction to ICS (I-100), Human Factors on the Fire line (L-180), Introduction to Wild Land Fire Behavior (S-190), Firefighting Training (S-130), and one training burn serving under the supervision of a qualified FFT2. Experience operating various types of equipment. Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g. First Aid, CPR, and driver's license). In addition, the following DESIRED skills and/or experiences would be an asset for this role but are not required. For applicants without these, please view these as areas or skillsets where you will have opportunities for growth and professional development: DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS Multi-lingual skills and multicultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated. 6 months -1 year of related experience. Must have valid driver's license and good driving record and able to obtain a DOT Health card. Experience operating various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g. Lawn mower, chainsaw, UTV, ATV or OHV, two-way radio, or similar equipment). ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION This position is based on a 40-hour work week, but may require irregular hours, long days, and travel on short notice. Housing is provided in possibly mixed gender facilities for the full term of employment. Transportation from TNC office to the various preserves will be provided by TNC. UPDATE; 8/14/24 This is a seasonal position that will start ASAP and end on November 8, 2024. The position will be based out of the Northern Tallgrass Prairie Ecoregion office in Glyndon, Minnesota.
