This position works to prevent the occurrence of occupational illnesses throughout the Minnesota Department of Corrections (DOC) employment through the application of industrial hygiene principles in the enforcement of occupational safety and health standards.

Job Responsibilities include:

  • To conduct compliance inspections, including the appropriate employers and employees, for scheduled and unscheduled visits, serious injuries, fatalities, and catastrophes, to accurately identify, resolve, and document apparent violations and/or hazards to ensure that places of employment are free from recognized hazards.

  • To write field investigation reports so that all parties involved understand the nature, scope, and findings of the investigation, any apparent violations of OSHA standards, and recommendations to correct potential hazards. Provide recommendations to employers to abate hazards in the workplace.

  • To review compliance inspection health files to ensure they include sufficient documentation of alleged findings, that all policies are procedures have been followed.

Work Location and Telework: The specific Minnesota work location will be determined at the time of appointment based on department business needs and applicant availability. This position offers a hybrid work environment including telework and field work. Field work may include traveling to various Minnesota Correctional Facilities (MCF) locations which may include Faribault, Lino Lakes. Oak Park Heights, Moose Lake, Red Wing, Rush City, St. Cloud, Shakopee, Stillwater, Togo and Willow River.

Minimum Qualifications

To be qualified for and considered for this position, applicants must meet all of the minimum qualifications listed below. Ensure that your resume contains descriptions of your work experiences sufficient for comparison against the requirements stated below and indicate the beginning and ending month and year of each job held.

Eighteen months occupational safety and health experience where responsibilities involved industrial hygiene sampling, the interpretation and application of safety and health standards and regulations. Experience must include responsibility for implementing safety and health programs, identifying hazards in the workplace, and abating those hazards. (i.e. Industrial Hygienist, Safety Manager, Safety Director, Safety Coordinator) and be certified as an Industrial Hygienist 3 and you must have and maintain a valid driver's license

  • A Master's Degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Public Health, Occupational Safety, Industrial Safety, Environmental Health, Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health or Engineering will substitute for 18 months of experience.

  • Bachelors Degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Public Health, Occupational Safety, Industrial Safety, Environmental Health, Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health or Construction Management will substitute for 1 year of experience.

In addition to the above experience, applicants will be evaluated on and must demonstrate the following qualifications:

  • Communication skills sufficient to write technical reports, communicate information to the public and effectively use technology.

  • Math skills sufficient to calculate sampling times, volumes, concentrations, and averages to accurately report results.

  • Ability to use personal protective and testing equipment.

  • Ability to work in indoor and outdoor environments, ascend ladders, work in loud environments, and transport up to 20 pounds.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals from a wide range of backgrounds, including those who may not share your same culture, ethnicity, language, or common experiences.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in developing and implementing environmental compliance programs.

  • Investigation experience.

Physical Requirements

The selected finalist is required to review and sign a Physical Demands Analysis (PDA) for this position. For a copy of the PDA, please email Teresa Moen at teresa.moen@state.mn.us . This position will require Tuberculosis screening prior to hire.

Additional Requirements

The selection process may include screening the top candidate(s) on their criminal history, predatory offender registration, offender associations and/or other applicable background information in accordance with the Department of Corrections policy. Top candidate(s) must pass a criminal history check which includes successful completion of all sentencing and/or restitution requirements of law enforcement jurisdictions, including probation.

Employment history/reference checks, including incidents of sexual harassment, will also be conducted on the top candidate(s) in accordance with the Department of Corrections policy. This may include a review of job performance and discipline records.

New employees will be fingerprinted within the first 30 days of employment.
